چکیده

We examine the level of substructure and mass segregation in the massive, young cluster Westerlund 1. We find that it is relatively smooth, with little or no mass segregation, but with the massive stars in regions of significantly higher than average surface density. While an expanding or bouncing-back scenario for the evolution of Westerlund 1 cannot be ruled out, we argue that the most natural model to explain these observations is one in which Westerlund 1 formed with no primordial mass segregation and at a similar or larger size than we now

First Structure Formation: I. Primordial Star Forming Regions in hierarchical models

We investigate the possibility of very early formation of primordial star clusters from high–σ perturbations in cold dark matter dominated structure formation scenarios. For this we have developed a powerful 2–level hierarchical cosmological code with a realistic and robust treatment of multi–species primordial gas chemistry, paying special attention to the formation and destruction of H2 molec...

Intermediate to low-mass stellar content of Westerlund 1

We have analysed near-infrared NTT/SofI observations of the starburst cluster Westerlund 1, which is among the most massive young clusters in the Milky Way. A comparison of colour-magnitude diagrams with theoretical main-sequence and pre-main sequence evolutionary tracks yields improved extinction and distance estimates of AKs = 1.13 ± 0.03 mag and d = 3.55 ± 0.17 kpc (DM = 12.75 ± 0.10 mag). Does sub - cluster merging accelerate mass segregation in local star formation ?

The nearest site of massive star formation in Orion is dominated by the Trapezium subsystem, with its four OB stars and numerous companions. The question of how these stars came to be in such close proximity has implications for our understanding of massive star formation and early cluster evolution. A promising route toward rapid mass segregation was proposed by McMillan et al. (2007), who sho...

Medium resolution 2 . 3 μ m spectroscopy of the massive Galactic open cluster Westerlund 1 ⋆

The Galactic open cluster Westerlund 1 was found only a few years ago to be much more massive than previously thought, with evidence suggesting its mass to be in excess of ∼10 5 M ⊙ , in the range spanned by young extragalactic star clusters. Unlike those clusters its proximity makes spatially resolved studies of its stellar population feasible. It is therefore the ultimate template for a young...

The Birth, Evolution and Death of Star Clusters

A dense-enough gas-accumulation evolves, over a few Myr of intensifying star formation, to an embedded cluster. If it contains a sufficient amount of mass, O stars form and explosively expel the remaining gas, whereas poorer clusters reduce their embryonic gas content more gradually. The sudden expulsion of gas unbinds most of a rich cluster, but a significant fraction of it can condense by two...
